A sleep consultant supports parents as they establish healthy and independent sleep habits for their child. Most parents who hire a sleep consultant are struggling because their child is not able to fall asleep and back to sleep without help from a parent. A sleep consultant will coach parents through the process of teaching the child to fall asleep and back to sleep without so much help. In addition to teaching independent sleep skills, sleep consultants will also help families come up with age-appropriate schedules, establish a bedtime routine, make sure the child is sleeping safely, etc.
This work can be done in person or virtually, but The Center for Pediatric Sleep Management (CPSM) specifically teaches the virtual model of this business. When you support families virtually, you can help more than one family at a time and help families outside of your own geographical location!

What are the qualifications required to become a sleep consultant?
Sleep consulting is an unregulated field, so technically you can work as a sleep consultant without a certification, although this is not recommended. Parents want to hear that the sleep consultant they have hired has been trained and is qualified to support them at a high level. Beyond the credibility that certification provides, you will also gain an extraordinary amount of knowledge and expertise if you take a sleep consultant certification course.
If you enroll in The Center for Pediatric Sleep Management, the qualifications to pass are being in good financial standing and passing all assignments within the program. CPSM does not require students to complete field hours before gaining certification as we want our students to get out there and start supporting families and earning income as soon as they have passed the online course. Sleep consultants never stop learning as each family has a unique set of circumstances and challenges to overcome.
Is there a demand for sleep consultants?

What are the pros and cons of being a sleep consultant?
Just like with anything else, there are pros and cons to working as a sleep consultant. I would say the downside to working in this field is that sometimes sleep consultants carry the stress of their clients on their shoulders. Sleep consultants are supporting families who are often very stressed and anxious due to a combination of sleep deprivation and nerves around making a change to the way their children sleep. Because sleep consultants tend to have a lot of compassion and empathy, sometimes we take on the stress of those who we are supporting.
The pros of sleep consulting far outweigh the cons. Pros include the freedom to work as much or as little as you want, we can work from anywhere, and we get to change the lives of families every single day. Hearing that we “saved someone’s marriage”, or “helped them to enjoy parenting again” never gets old! Being your own boss is not for everyone, but if you have the discipline to work hard and lead with passion, the rewards of owning your own business are endless.
